Volunteer at Hunger Walk/Run 2012

Help the Atlanta Community Food Bank fight hunger by volunteering at the Hunger Walk/Run.  Enjoy great entertainment, see thousands of walkers & runners in action, and help make it all happen! 

It is easy as 1, 2, 3!

  1. Review the volunteer positions posted below (Adult and All Ages-Family Friendly Opportunities are noted)
  2. Complete the Hunger Walk 2012 Volunteer Interest Survey at: http://acfb.convio.net/site/Survey?ACTION_REQUIRED=URI_ACTION_USER_REQUESTS&SURVEY_ID=6020
    to confirm your interest in volunteering.
  3. Check your email.  You should receive a confirmation of your position assignment closer to the date of the event.

PLEASE NOTE: Confirming your interest does not confirm your volunteer shift.  You will be notified when your interest is matched with a volunteer position.

Adult Volunteer Opportunities

Set Up Crew (ADULTS ONLY: groups or individuals)
Time:          9:00am - 11:30am (3.5 hours)
Duties:       40 volunteers will transform Turner Field Green Lot into Race Day! Arrange signs, set-up tables, load walk supplies and assist with overall preparations. Lifting required. Individuals will also work in pairs to ensure that route drummers, singers and dancers receive their equipment and have their supplies necessary to entertain walkers and runners along the route.

Parking Monitor-Green Lot (ADULTS ONLY: groups or individuals)
Time:          Two shifts available  9:00 am -1:00pm (4 hours) or 12:00pm – 3:30pm (3.5 hours)
Duties:       10 volunteers per shift will guard entrances to the lot where the main event will be held.  Volunteers will monitor traffic flow in and out of the lot and provide directions to attendees.

Parking Monitor-Blue/Orange Lots (ADULTS ONLY: groups or individuals)
Time:          11:00am – 3:00pm
Duties:       8 volunteers will monitor entrances to the parking lots where attendees will be instructed to park. Volunteers will monitor traffic flow in and out of the lot and provide directions to attendees.

Walk Registration (ADULTS ONLY: groups or individuals)
Time:          11:30 am - 3:30pm (4 hours)  PLUS Pre-Event Training March 9th – 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Duties:       48 volunteers will help walkers navigate the registration process, ensure their registration form is filled out properly and direct them to activities.  Volunteers for this role will be asked to attend a PRE EVENT training session at ACFB on Thursday, March 10th (6:30-8:00pm).

Run Registration (ADULTS ONLY: groups or individuals)
Time:          11:15am - 3:00pm (4 hours)
Duties:       25 volunteers register runners for the 5K Fun Run and distribute numbers and t-shirts.

Prize Distribution Volunteers (ADULTS ONLY: groups or individuals)
Time:          11:30am – 4:00 pm (4.5 hours)
Duties:       40 volunteers will distribute incentive prizes (pins or t-shirts) to the walkers based on their donations.

Information Guides (ADULTS ONLY: groups or individuals)
Time:          11:30am – 4:00pm (4.5 hours)
Duties:       20 volunteers will greet walkers, runners and guests, direct them to various areas and assist with general questions.  (Don’t worry, you’ll get a great cheat sheet and have staff nearby.)

Entertainment Activities (ADULTS & 16+: groups or individuals)
Time:         11:30am - 4:00pm (4.5 hours)
Duties:       30 volunteers will help run carnival games, space walks, face painting at the Family Fun area at the park!


 

Family and Youth Friendly Opportunities

PLEASE NOTE: 
Youth under 18 years old who wish to volunteer must be accompanied by an adult chaperone (1 adult for every 1 to 2 children).  For youth organizations who wish to volunteer during Hunger Walk, 1 chaperone must be present for every 5 youth.

Walk Marshals (ALL AGES: groups or individuals)
Time:         12:30 am - 4:00pm (3.5 hours)
Duties:       75 volunteers direct and cheer walkers along the route.  Some marshals hold signs and encourage walkers to stay on the correct side of the street.  Help keep the environment clean and pick up discarded water bottles from participants. 

Refreshments (ALL AGES: groups or individuals) Volunteer Opportunity Currently Full
Time:         12:00pm – 4:00pm (4 hours)
Duties:       10 volunteers will provide runners and walkers with water and fruit as they complete the run and/or walk.

Water Stops (ALL AGES: groups or individuals)    Volunteer Opportunity Currently Full
Time:          1:00pm - 4:00pm (3 hours)
Duties:       80 volunteers in groups of 10 will work as a team to provide walkers with refreshments along the route and keep the route clean from discarded bottles.

Recycling (ALL AGES: groups or individuals)
Time:         11:30am - 4:00pm (4.5 hours)
Duties:       20 volunteers will work as a team to gather all plastic bottles, aluminum cans, etc. from the day to get recycled. 

Route Recycling (ALL AGES: groups or individuals)
Time:         1:30pm – 4:30pm (3 hours)
Duties:       15 volunteers will work as a team and follow the walkers on the route to gather all plastic bottles, aluminum cans, etc. from the day to see that they are recycled. 

Post Walk Break Down (all groups, families & individuals encouraged)
Time:          3:30pm - 6:00pm (2.5 hours)
Duties:       A final crew of 35 will take down banners and other Hunger Walk supplies at Turner Field.  Volunteers help clean the park to ensure it is in good condition and assist with recycling. Additionally, a group of 5-10 people is needed to do heavy lifting taking down the stage.

We sincerely appreciate the help of our volunteers and always aim to be as accommodating as circumstances permit.  We do ask that volunteers be flexible to help us meet the needs of this fantastic event.  Volunteer assignments may be switched to similar volunteer jobs on the day of the event if necessary.
